Affording Prescription Drugs

Pharmaceutical companies have come to the realization that some of the drugs they are offering are unavailable to those who need them the most.  Due to the irony of the situation, the drug companies have set up a clearinghouse allowing low income families the prescription drugs they need at little or no cost.

The margin of profits made each year in the field of pharmaceuticals has been on a steady rise since their emergence onto the market and the controversy over the amount of advertising has brought up another government action; limited advertising that will ultimately lower the cost of most prescription drugs.

Programs like the clearinghouse have been available to doctors for quite some time, but the process in which to enroll a patient was long and lengthy.  Now, patients can enroll online and if their income is less than double that of the national poverty level according to the family size, they qualify for aid in prescription drugs.   Newer programs allow patients and caregivers to apply directly online.

The different programs cater to people with different qualifications and needs.  Medicare Patients can apply for assistance directly through Medicare by using this website Medicare.gov. Patients with other types of insurance or no insurance at all can seek assistance through the Partnership for Prescription Assistance (1-888-477-2669). This website has a five step application process that allows a caregiver or patient to find out what drug company or assistance program they qualify for based on their income, prescription needs, and insurance. This website is also available to people with no insurance or who are unaware of who their insurance carrier is.

These websites allow patients to find out what they are eligible for and what programs are right for their needs all in a few simple steps.
